Star Theory

Star Theory

Star Theory is a theory thought up by Patrick Phillips. There are four main areas to the star theory, it says how Stars (the artists) can be presented as a real person, a public performer, a persona, and also as an image.

A star can be presented as a real person; in the way that the artist is able to reach out to their fans and make their audience feel as though they know the performer. The artists makes the audience feel this way by acting down to earth and having to deal with everyday things, this makes the artist loook normal, and just one of us. An example of this would be shopping in normal supermarkets.

A star can also be presented as a public performer of roles. The audience are able to sum up and put the artist in certain ideological positions, the audience can associate the artists with attitudes. The audience are able to come to this conclusion through knowing the characteristics of a star, such as their voice, look and gesture.

A star is a persona, the audience are able to know exactly what the star is like. The star plays the same roles when performing, as their persona. They personalities are able to be shown through how they act, the media, fans, and publicists all play an important role in presenting the performer as a star.

Stars can also be presented as an image, the artist can present themselves as a positive image, they can set things such as fashion trends and can be very influential on specific things such as gender and sexuality. An example of this would David Beckham, his regular changing hair styles can influence his fans to change their haircuts.
